What do you hope to get out of this programme?
Be a partner in this initiative. Always have a special interest in the younger ones. Hope to be an instrument in their growth process to one day be a functioning doctor and someone’s teacher/mentor.
What kind of mentees do you wish to take under your wing?
One who welcomes a mentor and is happy to share his/her journey (journeying).
Any ideas on keeping these sessions engaging?

Dr Celine Yao

What do you hope to get out of this programme?
Having been part of the SMSANZ/SMSV in previous years, I felt very supported in my final year in 2020 knowing I had seniors who were always willing to help out and answer questions whenever I had any. As a SMSANZ alumni who is currently working in regional Victoria (Warrnambool), I hope to provide the same support I received to those in their final or penultimate years who are keen on staying in Australia beyond medical school or are interested in learning more about working in the regional area!
What kind of mentees do you wish to take under your wing?
Honestly anyone who wants to be my mentee (:P), especially those keen on working in Australia or regional areas!
What kind of mentees do you wish to take under your wing?
Definitely bonding over food (happy to catch up over meals/coffee if COVID permits!)
Dr Chew An-Ning
University of New South Wales
Position: Resident
Year of Graduation: 2017

What do you hope to get out of this programme?
To be able to help IMGs integrate into the Singapore medical system through my own experience. To be someone they can reach out to when they come back to sgp to work so it won’t feel so foreign and scary.
What kind of mentees do you wish to take under your wing?
Someone keen to return to Singapore to work after graduating and preferably interested in the IM residency program
Any ideas on keeping these sessions engaging?
Just be real, honest and get to know one other as friends.
Dr Colin Yeo
National University of Singapore
Position: Consultant, Clinical Assistant Professor
Year of Graduation: 2005
Residing in: Singapore
What do you hope to get out of this programme?
Empower mentees with the fortitude to handle the challenges of working life, to re-discover or understand the reason why they want to do medicine. For those who realise that medicine is the wrong career, to discover sooner so that they have the courage to move on. Help mentees to discover their passion so that they can realise their talent.
What kind of mentees do you wish to take under your wing?
Unassuming mentees who are willing to learn, open minded and not afraid to try new things.

Any ideas on keeping these sessions engaging?
They can be ad hoc
Dr Esther Ern Hwei Chan
University of Cambridge & Imperial College London, UK
Position: Resident
Year of Graduation: 2014
Residing in: Singapore
What do you hope to get out of this programme?
That medical students would know what I would have wanted to know at your that of my journey so that they can be better prepared for life as a doctor – not just in terms of career, but life as a whole! There is more to life than just our jobs.
What kind of mentees do you wish to take under your wing?
Mentees have to be keen to learn, have an open mind and believe that its more about “the journey and not the end point” 🙂
I studied in UK and not ANZ so I hope mentees assigned to me will be understanding if I do not fully understand the ANZ medical school system. Also, I am a surgical trainee and a mother of 2 young kids, so perhaps my experiences may be more relevant to those who are keen to explore surgery as a career and female medical students who may have worries about juggling doctorhood and family life.
In exchange for my time and advice, I hope that the mentees assigned to me are responsible (eg. attend planned meetings on time, no “no shows” without legitimate reasons in advance), and are not too sensitive as I can be a bit blunt/direct at times (apologies in advance).
Any ideas on keeping these sessions engaging?
Mentees have to participate actively in discussion instead of just “spoon-feeding” from mentors. It would be amazing if the smaller groups could meet in person over coffee but alas… COVID-19.
Dr Ethan Tan
Monash University
Position: Houseman (HO)
Year of Graduation: 2020
Residing in: Melbourne, Victoria
What do you hope to get out of this programme?
As a Monash graduate PGY1 working at the Austin hospital, I hope to help junior Singaporean batchmates in the many challenges they might face as Singaporean students studying in Australia. Whether it may be questions about the pros/cons of staying/leaving, job applications, studying for exams or choosing a specialization, I hope to provide some insight, guidance and resources/networks which may help! Having benefited from my involvement in SMSV as a medical student, I hope to be able to give back to the community as an alumni.
What kind of mentees do you wish to take under your wing?
Mentees who are intentional about the questions they hope to ask and what they would like to get out of the programme, reasonably outgoing and keen to connect with new people. In general, those who are keen to learn and share their challenges/questions so I can provide perspectives which may be helpful for them.
Any ideas on keeping these sessions engaging?
– Ensuring the sessions are well structured, and that we make the most of the time we have
– Having mentees submit questions prior to the meeting so the session can be more focused on the mentees’ needs
– Having short presentations on topics of interest (whether academic or more practical) with a Q+A at the end
– Depending on the makeup of the group, having in person meetings where time and circumstances might permit with those in Melbourne, and doing job shadowing

Dr Natalie Ng

Position: Resident

Position: Houseman (HO)
What do you hope to get out of this programme?
Not so much to “benefit from the programme per se, but to keenly guide fresh grads/soon-to-be Drs entering the local workforce, to ease the transition when they start out as House officers. Generally the learning curve overseas-trained HOs is steeper and can be challenging, hoping to guide mentees and provide practical tips, good habits as a HO, ways to improve/ work faster and more efficiently, adapt to the system better, sharpen their clinical acumen & encourage them. These are advice that I wish me and my colleagues had when we first started out years ago, so that our journeys were less rocky and smoother. Other aims (if they’re keen) guiding them if they’re exploring residency training programs (e.g. not just FM), interview tips & how to prepare their portfolios.
