2022 Project Beyond Borders x New Hope Cambodia

The aim of Project Beyond Borders (PBB) is to provide humanitarian aid through a focus on education, prevention and early intervention to better target deep-rooted health issues within the community. In doing so, this is in the hope of enabling these communities to take charge of their own health and wellbeing beyond our yearly short term visits. Ultimately, we hope to ignite the passion for volunteerism in future medical professionals and equip them with the skills necessary to practice in these environments.

In 2022, we partnered with New Hope Cambodia, an NGO in Siem Reap. A total of 17 participants (1 convenor inclusive) participated in the trip from 11-16 January 2023. Basic health checkups were performed for over 200 students ranging from aged 3 to 19 over a span of two days. Health education lessons (dental hygiene, food and nutrition, exercise etc) were also taught to the students and teachers. Food packages were also provided to malnourished children and their families, which included fruits, sweet potatoes and eggs. The trip to Siem Reap fulfilled its purpose and the general consensus gathered from volunteers was that this was a successful and meaningful trip.

In 2023, we hope to branch out by either collaborating with HealthEx International in their trips, or organizations that SMA (Singapore Medical Association) has links with to enable more interventional procedures to be conducted, as well as to achieve a more impactful and greater clinical focus in the trip.
