The SMSANZ Basic and Advanced Dialect Programme 2021 is an annual event organised to allow students to get a better grasp of the common dialects spoken in Singapore. This would better equip medical students with the necessary skills to communicate with patients, especially the older generation, as future practitioners. After receiving opinions from SMSANZ members on various social media platforms, Hokkien and Cantonese were the dialects members were most interested in.
The aims of the programme are:
- To expose participants to the dialect, culture and practices related to the dialect
- To Learn simple vocabulary to aid in communication with the target audience (locals that are only capable of speaking dialects).
Hello Participants! Here’s everything you need to know about the programme and how to register! Please feel free to email us at events@smsanz.sg for any queries.

What is the difference between the Basic and Advanced Dialect Programme?
The purpose of the advanced dialect programme is to provide a platform for participants who have some background knowledge in the dialects and would like to learn more technical (medical) terminologies that can be applied in the clinical setting. It is also beneficial for participants that attended the basic dialect programme, acting as a refresher. There is also more opportunity for them to practise speaking the dialect, and more role playing so that they would be more confident speaking the dialect.
Participants will also be recruited using a google form. Participants who attended the Basic Dialect Programme previously and participants signing up in pairs would receive a discount off the registration fee.
