The Annual Basic Suturing Workshop aims to equip junior medical and pre-clinical students, with fundamental suturing skills essential for surgical practice. Such opportunities are rare for students at this level, and our aim is to provide them with a platform to begin exploring and pursuing their interests in surgery. Additionally, the workshop serves as a valuable refresher for senior medical students, allowing them to strengthen their suturing proficiency.
In December 2023, the Basic Suturing Workshop was conducted in collaboration with LKCMedicine, drawing an impressive turnout of 50 participants. We were fortunate to have the support of 10 dedicated volunteer mentors from LKC and SMSANZ, who made significant contributions to the instruction of our students.
The Advanced Suturing Workshop, held annually, has consistently been a resounding success among students eager to further develop their surgical skills. This workshop is exclusively available to individuals who have demonstrated their commitment to strengthening their foundational surgical knowledge by attending previous SMSANZ Basic Suturing Workshops or similar events organised by their universities. Past collaborations have included partnerships with doctors from Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, where participants were instructed in advanced surgical techniques, surgical hand ties, and laparoscopic procedures.
In January of this year, we collaborated with Duke-NUS for the workshop, with Dr. Edwin Yang leading the session. He had some of his colleagues to mentor our senior medical students. The workshop attracted full attendance, with 30 students benefiting from a productive and engaging experience as they refined their suturing skills and technique
Given the workshop’s popularity among our students, we aspire to accommodate even more participants in future sessions. However, this ambition comes with challenges such as securing additional venue space and acquiring more resources for suturing, which we are currently navigating.
